ASEM summit reaffirms support for JCPOA, lifting of sanctions against Iran


Sputnik - The participants of the 12th AsiaEurope Meeting (ASEM) have reaffirmed their collective support for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, noting that the lifting of sanctions against Tehran is an essential part of the agreement, the ASEM chair's statement released on Friday said.



"With regard toIran, Leaders reiterated their collective support fordiplomatic dialogue and the Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction Leaders recognized that, alongsidefull and effective implementation byIran ofits nuclear-related commitments, the lifting ofsanctions including the consequences arising fromit constitutes an essential part ofthe JCPOA. Preserving the nuclear deal withIran is a matter ofrespecting international agreements, and promoting international security, peace, and stability," the ASEM chair's statement read.


Washington withdrew fromthe JCPOA inMay and, pledging toreinstateanti-Iranian sanctionsoverseveral waves, withfinancial restrictions introduced this pastsummer and energy sanctions planned forNovember 4. Despite the US withdrawal, other signatories, including Russia, China, France, Germany, and the UK confirmed their commitment tothe nuclear deal.

Denuclearization ofthe Korean Peninsula

The participants also addressed the situation inNorth Korea, calling Pyongyang toreturn tothe Treaty onthe Non-Proliferation ofNuclear Weapons.
"Leaders called onthe DPRK tocompletely, verifiably and irreversibly dismantle all its nuclear and other Weapons ofMass Destruction (WMD), ballistic missiles and related programmes and facilities inaccordance withthe relevant UNSC resolutions In this context, they urged the DPRK toreturn tothe Non-Proliferation Treaty and IAEA safeguards atan early date and tocooperate withits monitoring system," the document read.


Earlier this month, Russian, Chinese and North Korean deputy foreign ministers have stated that the UN Security Council (UNSC) should begin timely revision ofthe sanctions againstPyongyang, also expressing their support forthe negotiation process betweenNorth Korea and the US, aswell asinter-Korean talks.

Security Cooperation

The delegations ofthe meeting also announced inthe statement that the countries would promote cooperation onthe security issues indifferent regions ofthe world.
"Leaders also exchanged views onthe ways topromote and strengthen cooperation onpeace and security issues ofcommon interest and concern including Afghanistan, Syria, the Middle East, and North Africa, Ukraine," the document read.
