Bahrain FM speaks of new anti-Iran show

IRNA - Bahraini Foreign Minister Khalid Bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa on Friday spoke of a new anti-Iran show in Washington in coming days.

The Bahraini government intends to unveil what he called an Iranian-engineered plot in Washington in coming days, he told the UAE based daily 'National'.

He was speaking after his participation in a meeting in New York attended by the US secretary of state and foreign ministers of eight Arab countries. He said the New York session focused on 'important strategic issues'.

Repeating his previous unfounded accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Bahraini foreign minister labeled Tehran as a threat to the region.

According to a statement released by the US State Department, in the Friday's session held in New York with participation of the foreign ministers of Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, the issue of a 'Middle East strategic coalition' or so called 'Arab Nato' was discussed.

It is for the first time that the United States has openly confirmed the existence of a such a plan.

Some media outlets have already speculated that such a body would formally announce its establishment in January.

The plan to establish an Arab Nato set forth by the US and its allies for the past few months has so far got nowhere due to a wide gap among the Persian Gulf littoral states. An instance of such a split is quite evident in the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC), a grouping which came into existence as the first US plan for creating a security belt in the region against Iran.

Efforts to form an Arab Nato are being made at a time when the Arab countries of the region are unable to manage tensions among themselves and have reached a deadlock within the PGCC.

Some sources believe that due to outbreak of differences among its member states, the PGCC is on the brink of collapse and for this reason the US is trying to prevent such a thing from happening.
