Light tremor jolts northern Iran

IRNA - An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale jolted Juybar in northern Province of Mazandaran early Sunday.


According to the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred at 2:04 hours local time (22:26 GMT) in an area located at 36.63 degrees latitude and 52.98 degrees longitude and in the depth of 15 km underground.

The epicenter of the quake has been registered at 6 km of Juybar, 9 km of Kuhi Kheyl and 10 km of Sari.

Speaking to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) Head of Mazandaran crisis management office Ali Asghar Ahmadi said no reports have yet been released on possible casualties or damage to properties.

Iran sits on major seismological fault lines, making it one of the world's most quake-prone countries.
