Iran: EU must decide if it wants to submit to US

Press TV - Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says the European parties to the 2015 nuclear deal with Iranmust decide if they wantto submitto US pressure to turn its back on Iran or not.

Zarif emphasized that Iran was waiting for EU parties - Britain, France, and Germany - to compensate for the losses incurred as a result of Washington's withdrawal from the deal.

"The Europeans and the other signatories must act in order to compensate for the effects of the US sanctions," he told Der Spiegel in remarks published by the magazine on Friday.

Zarif further said Europes performance in face of US oil and banking sanctions against Iran were a "barometer" of its efforts to ensure that Irans interests were met, warning that Tehran might take the required action if "the balance of give and take were destroyed."

The US introduced a first round of sanctions against Iran in August after unilaterally leaving its multi-lateral nuclear agreement with the Islamic Republic. The first round of sanctions primarily targetsIran'sfinancial, automotive, aviation and metals sectors. Washington is preparing to introduce another round of sanctionstargeting Irans oil and banking sections on November 4.

The EU has invariably opposed the US withdrawal, calling the deal a pillar of regional and international peace and security.

Tehran has tasked the European signatories - the UK, France, Russia, and Germany -to make theircontinued commitments to the deal worthwhile by guaranteeing that the country continued to benefit from the economic rewards of the deal. In case Europe failed to do so, Iran could either leave the deal or resort to its partial or reduced implementation, Zarif said.

The Iranian top diplomat further added that the Europeans neededto decide whether they were ready to let deeds follow their words, referring to the assurances that Europehas given Iran to stay in the deal, technically known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
