Iran has full control of Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz - Revolutionary guards chief


Sputnik - Earlier, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) held large-scale military drills in the Persian Gulf. The IRGC said they were ready to disrupt other countries' oil shipments through the strait if Iran's own exports were impeded.




Iran has full control ofPersian Gulf and Strait ofHormuz, according tothe Islamic Revolutionary Guard navy chief.

Iranian officials have earlier threatened toblock the Strait ofHormuz, cutting offthe main oil shipping route, inretaliation forany hostile actions fromthe US.

In early July, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps held large-scale military drills inthe Persian Gulf. The drills were part ofthe annual exercises framework.

Earlier, Iranian Supreme Leader's Top Adviser forInternational Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati said atthe Valdai discussion club inMoscow that if Iran was not permitted toexport its oil viathe strait, no other Middle East state would be able todo so.

Iran's ground forces commander Brigadier General Kiomars Heidari has warned the US and its allies toavoid trying tobring Iran's oil exports toa halt adding that the country's armed forces have all they need todefend the nation.

In turn, US Secretary ofState Michael Pompeo said that the US is poised and ready toensure uninterrupted oil supplies throughthe Strait ofHormuz despitethreats fromIran.

In June, the US Department ofState urged oil companies tostop exporting oil fromIran byNovember toavoid US sanctions.

In May, US President Donald Trump said that the United States would leave the nuclear agreement withIran that stipulated Tehran should guarantee the peaceful nature ofits nuclear program inexchange forthe gradual lifting ofsanctions.
