Al-Maliki: Iraq opposes economic pressure on Iran

IRNA Iraqi Vice President Nouri Al-Maliki said on Thursday that his country is opposed to any pressure and economic sanctions imposed by the US against the Islamic Republic of Iran.


In a meeting with Irans Ambassador to Iraq Iraj Masjedi, he who doubles as the secretary-general of the Islamic Dawa Party added that the policy of exerting economic pressure on Iran and sanctions is rejected and the international community should block the policy of pushing peoples towards famine.

Masjedi, for his part, hailed Al-Malikis supportive stance regarding Iran in the region and world.

The two officials also explored avenues for boosting bilateral relations and discussed regional and international political and security situation.

In a statement on Wednesday, Al-Maliki rejected US President Donald Trumps anti-Iran measures, describing it as flagrant violation of international regulations.

He stressed that Iraq should not accompany the US in its anti-Iran policies.

We condemn US anti-Iran measures and all unilateral sanctions against the nations and urge the regional and global states to do so, he said.

He also described economic pressure as a wrong, illegal, oppressive, illegitimate and unjustifiable move, arguing that they do not correspond with international regulations.

He also called on the Iraqi government no to side with perpetrators of anti-Iran moves, urging all the governments across the world to counter the hostile act against the neighboring friendly country and attempt to neutralize it.
