Wintershall says not to pursue further projects in Iran

Sputnik - Germany's Wintershall energy company told Sputnik it would not pursue further projects in Iran after the memorandum of understanding, agreed with the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), expired.

In order tolay the foundations forpossible further activities inthe region, inApril 2016 Wintershall signed a Memorandum ofUnderstanding (MoU) withthe National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) onpossible future cooperation and has examined potential oil projects sincethen. The economic conditions and the geopolitical environment are ofdecisive importance forthe realization ofsuch projects," a company spokesman said.

"Unfortunately, it was not possible toclarify the general economic conditions definitively inour discussions withNIOC. In addition, the overall political situation significantly impedes any possible engagement inIran atthe moment. The Memorandum ofUnderstanding agreed withthe NIOC will expire soon and will not be extended. Wintershall will not pursue any further projects inIran forthe time being," he said.
