Sputnik - Indian officials are scheduled to discuss at length the US sanctions on Iran with a delegation of US experts, which is expected to arrive in New Delhi on July 16.

New Delhi (Sputnik):India's minister ofpetroleum and natural gas, Dharmendra Pradhan, has stated that the country's requirement will be the deciding factor beforeany steps are taken inline withthe US sanctions onIran. Pradhan added that there was no contradiction withinthe government and that it would make a decision beforethe US sanctions are implemented, i.e., November 4.
"There is no contradiction inour thinking onany issues. We will first ensure that our energy demands are met. Priority will be given tonational interest," said Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, asquoted byBusiness Line.

India is Iran's second-largest buyer and the latter's share inIndia's import volumes stands at10.4 percent inthe current financial year.
"We will first look atour national interest. India's energy basket has multiple sources now. Our focus will be tosee that our requirement is not affected, and toensure this, we will do what we have todo. But, we will also keep a watch onglobal geopolitics," Pradhan said.

The statement comes afterThe Tehran Times, ina scathing attack onthe Indian government, criticized the flip-flop policy and blamed New Delhi forturning its back ona promise made bythe minister ofexternal affairs, Sushma Swaraj, a few weeks ago. Swaraj hadrebukedtheTrump administrationanddeclared that India would not recognize sanctions unilaterally imposed byany entity other thanthe United Nations.
"A few days ago, less thana month afterSwaraj's statement, India buckled underthe overwhelming U.S. pressure, betraying national interest and confirming its statusas a pygmy, rather thana giant," The Tehran Times wrote ina recent article.

The Indian government has indicated that it will make a decision oncrude imports fromIran afterdiscussing the issue withthe Trump administration.
