Guterres keen on safeguarding JCPOA: UN spokesman

IRNA UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is keen on safeguarding the landmark Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a senior UN official said on Tuesday.

Talking to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reporter, the spokesman for the UN Secretary General Stphane Dujarric said Guterres' viewpoint regarding JCPOA has not changed.

Commenting on Guterres' report on United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2231, Dujarric underlined that the report would be published in near future.

Asking if Guterres has confirmed in the report that the US has violated Resolution 2231 as a result of its withdrawal? he said,'I think we should wait for the report to be published.'

Resolution 2231 was adopted by the UNSC in July 2015 to endorse a nuclear agreement between Iran and six other countries, the so-called P5+1.

The UNSC document terminated the provisions of seven previous UNSC resolutions against Iran.

The resolution also requests reports from the United Nations secretary-general on the implementation of the JCPOA every six months.
