Iran asks OPEC support amid US sanctions



Sputnik - Reacting to the recent wave of US sanctions, announced earlier in the day by the Treasury Department, Iran's oil minister has asked OPEC to support his country against what he called "illegal, unilateral and extraterritorial sanctions".



"I would liketo seek OPEC's support inaccordance withArticle 2 ofthe OPEC Statute, which emphasizes safeguarding the interests ofmember countries individually and collectively," Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh wrote ina letter tothe United Arab Emirates Energy Minister Suhail al-Mazrouei, who holds OPEC presidency in2018.


Earlier inthe day,the US Treasury Department declared new US sanctions againstIran, citing what they called "ongoing human rights abuses, censorship, and other despicable acts it commits againstits own citizens".

The latest wave ofUS sanctions targeted, inparticular, six individuals and three companies: Director-General ofIslamic Republic ofIran Broadcasting Abdulali Ali-Asgari, Ansar-e Hezbollah leaders Hossein Allahkarah, Abdolhamid Mohtasham and Hamid Ostad, Secretary ofIran's Supreme Cyberspace Council Abolhassan Firouzabadi and Iranian judiciary official Abdolsamad Khoramabadi, aswell asAnsar-e Hezbollah, Evin Prison, Hanista Programming Group, Al-Bilad Islamic Bank forInvestment and Finance, Al-Naser Airlines and Dart Airlines.

US Sanctions Against Iran

Washington has beentightening the screw ofsanctions againstIran sinceUS President Donald Trump's withdrawal fromthe JCPOA, asknown asthe Irannuclear deal. In particular, the Treasury specified these measures were implemented asa part ofthe US president's "aggressive campaign" againstIran's eliteIslamic Revolutionary Guard Corps(IRGC).

On May 22, Washington imposed sanctions onfive members ofthe IRGC overtheir alleged efforts toprovide missile support toYemen'sHouthi militants. Previously, the Treasury sanctioned six individuals, includingValiollah Seif, the head ofIran's central bank, overalleged ties tothe IRGC and theHezbollahmovement, which Washington considers tobe a terrorist group.
