US sought 'total confrontation' with Iran when leaving nuke deal - Lavrov

Sputnik - The United States was counting on a total confrontation with Iran by leaving the nuclear deal, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said speaking at the Primakov Readings.

"I remember the apocalyptic predictions ofthe 1980s abouta 'nuclear winter,'" he said. "Fortunately, it did not come topass, although the 'Arab Spring' came, which, througha series oftragic events, also exacerbated the problem ofweapons ofmass destruction."
"I am referring tothe withdrawal ofthe United States fromthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction onthe Iranian nuclear program withthe view oforganizing a total confrontation withIran, and many staged situations involving the alleged use ofchemical weapons bytheSyrian governmentaimed atchanging the regime inDamascus," Lavrov added.

Moscow would likeUS foreign policy tobe more predictable, Sergei Lavrov said.
"Factors and actors influence Washington's foreign policy and not just always inone direction, butvery often inthe very opposite. And colossal shares offoreign policy decisions inWashington are taken withan eye tothe domestic political situation. And the closer the midterm elections, the more it will be manifested," Lavrov said.

On May 8, US President Donald Trump announced that his country would exit the 2015 JCPOA, which provided forthe gradual lifting ofthe anti-Iranian sanctions inexchange forTehran's maintaining the peaceful nature ofits nuclear program. Besides, Trump decided toreinstate the previously lifted sanctions onIran.

TheJCPOAwas signed in2015 byIran, China, France, Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, United States and the European Union afterlong and intense negotiations. Tehran has repeatedly stated that it would give a harsh response if Washington departs fromthe JCPOA commitments.
