Experts explain what will happen if US pulls out of Iran nuclear deal

Sputnik - With the UK, France and Germany re affirming their commitment to uphold the 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal; there remains a possibility that US under President Trump will withdraw, which could have severe ramifications for the political stability in the Middle East.

Sputnik spoke withAnoush Ehteshami Professor ofInternational Relations atDurham University and Ghoncheh Tazmini; Political commentator formore.

Sputnik: What impact would there be if the United States withdrew fromthe Iran Nuclear Deal?

Anoush Ehteshami:It will have ramifications forthe USs relations withthe EU who have underlined the importance ofthe nuclear deal withIran and also complicate the USs relations withRussia and China.

Russia and China would liketo see the denuclearization ofthe Korean peninsula and would take a dim view ofthe US pulling outof the Iran deal inthe midst ofnegotiations inKorea. So it has global ramifications not just forthe Middle East.

Sputnik: Was the deal fair toall sides?

Anoush Ehteshami:I dont think any party would have signed upto it if it wasnt fair tothem atthe time they agreed it. The US wanted toreduce nuclear enrichment, which has happened, Europe wanted the same, asdid China and Russia and Iran ofcourse wanted lifting ofsanctions and recognition asa nuclear state. So all ofthem got toget what they wanted.

Ghoncheh Tazmini:This is a multilateral agreement brokered byseven countries, and all ofthem; including the US have made a commitment. If someone can just unilaterally scrap a deal, that would be a major setback inthe validity ofinternational law.

We had this withBush; reckless thinking. I dont think Trump can afford todo that due tothe already tense situation inthe region and the fact that Iran has a strong influence inthe Middle East.
