US state secretary: Washington might leave Iran nuclear deal in May



Sputnik - The United States is likely to walk away from the international deal on Iran's nuclear program next month unless the flaws in the agreement are addressed, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during a news conference in Brussels on Friday.




US Secretary ofState Mike Pompeo stated duringa news conference inBrussels onFriday that the deal, formally known asthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction(JCPOA), will be addressed duringhis upcoming trip tothe Middle East.
"With respect tothe JCPOA we talked aboutit some today," Pompeo said aftera meeting ofNATO ministers inBrussels. "I am confident that that will be a topic onmy trip throughoutthe Middle East aswell. Not only the concerns that President Trump has expressed consistently, buttalking aboutways topotentially address those shortcomings that may find a potential solution tothe very flaws that President Trump has identified fora long time now There has been no decision made."


However, he went onsaying thatthe United States is likely towalk away fromthe international deal onIran's nuclear program next month unless the flaws inthe agreement are addressed.
"Absent a substantial fix, absentovercoming the shortcomings, the flaws ofthe deal, he is unlikely tostay inthat deal pastthis May," Pompeo said.


Trump has repeatedly criticized the nuclear agreement, formally known asthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA) which put restrictions onTehrans nuclear research inexchange forsanctions relief. Tehran, inits turn, reacted saying that the country will withdraw fromthe agreement incaseif changes are made.

In January, Trump asked the US Congress and European Union allies toaddress "flaws" inthe agreement. The United States is expected toannounce whether it will extend US sanctions waivers forIran onMay 12.
