US working with European partners to 'fix' Iran nuclear deal - State Dept.



Sputnik - The United States is actively working with its European partners in order to "fix" the Iran nuclear agreement, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Satterfield said during testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee.



"It is the intent ofthe administration atthis moment tofix the JCPOA.Those efforts, those diplomatic efforts are underway quite actively withour key European partners. We hope they produce a successful result," Acting Assistant Secretary ofState forNear Eastern Affairs David Satterfield said.


Earlier, the Council ofthe European Union said that it had extended sanctions againstIran inresponse toalleged human rights violations untilApril 2019.

A large part ofthe international anti-Iranian sanctions, including the withholding ofaccess tofrozen assets, ban onbuying passenger planes, and sale ofoil and coal, was lifted afterthe International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verified inJanuary 2016 Iran's compliance withthe terms ofthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA).

The EU states have been intalks withthe US administration onhow topersuade President Donald Trump toextend sanction waivers forIran pastthe May 12 deadline afterhe warned topull his country outof the JCPOA if it is not fixed.

InJanuary, Trump announced he would extend sanctions relief forIran given that the country was incompliance withthe JCPOA. He also said that would be the last time he signed the sanctions waiver unless European countries agreed toa supplemental deal to "fix" fundamental problems withthe nuclear agreement.

On July 14, 2015, the European Union, Iran, and the P5+1 group ofnations the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany signed the JCPOA. The agreement stipulates a gradual lifting ofsanctions imposed onIran inexchange forthe country maintaining a peaceful nature ofits nuclear program.
