McCain supports strikes on Syria, urges new strategy for US in Syria



Sputnik - US Senator John McCain (R-AZ), the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has expressed in a statement his support for the US strikes on Syria and called for a new strategy in the region.




Earlier inthe day, the United States, the United Kingdom and France have launched airstrikes atSyrian targets overreports ofa chemical attack inthe city ofDuma, allegedly carried outby the Syrian government.
"I applaud the President fortaking military action againstthe [Syrian President Bashar] Assad regime forits latest use ofchemical weapons, and forsignaling his resolve todo so again if these heinous attacks continue," the senator said ina statement.


McCain thanked the United Kingdom and France foralso launching strikes and expressed hope that the strikes would "impose meaningful costs onAssad."
"To succeed inthe long run, we need a comprehensive strategy forSyria and the entire region. The President needs tolay outour goals, not just withregard toISIS, butalso the ongoing conflict inSyria and malign Russian and Iranian influence inthe region. Airstrikes disconnected froma broader strategy may be necessary, butthey alone will not achieve U.S. objectives inthe Middle East," McCain concluded.


Damascus has refuted the allegations ofthe attack, while Moscow has warned that the reports ofthe attack could be a provocation.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said ata briefing onFriday that the video withthe victims ofthe alleged Duma chemical attack receiving first aid, shared onthe social media, was staged. According tothe spokesman, the participants ofthe video were found, and they revealed the truth aboutthe filming.
