US bid for strikes on Syria aims to undermine Russia-Turkey-Iran alliance

Sputnik- The United States may carry strikes against Syria in fear that its allies' strategic defeat by the Syrian army may persuade other countries in the region to join the newly emerged winning alliance of guarantor states - Russia, Turkey and Iran, experts told Sputnik.

On Saturday, several media outlets, citing Syrian militants, accused the Syrian government ofcarrying outa chemical weapons attack inDouma, located some 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) northeast ofthe capital Damascus.

Trump blamed Syrian President Bashar Assad forthe incident, adding that Russia and Iran were also responsible because they support the Syrian government. On Monday, Trump said his administration would make a major decision withinthe next 24 to48 hours onwhat the US response will be.

The Russian reconciliation center forSyria onSunday categorically refuted the media reports that the Syrian military dropped a chlorine-filled bomb onDuma. The Russian Foreign Ministry said such erroneous information aims tocover the actions ofterrorists and justify possible external military intervention inSyria.

Mob War
"The Americans and its allies likethe Saudis and Israelis have suffered a major strategic defeat ofincalculable proportions inSyria. They have failed toachieve their goal, leaving Assad inpower and Syria (and its Hezbollah ally) toserve asexamples inthe Arab world that resistance tothe West is possible," Alessandro Bruno, an analyst atToronto-based advisory firm Lombardi Letter and former UN officer inNorth Africa, told Sputnik.

At the April 4 summit inAnkara, leaders ofRussia, Turkey and Iran, Vladimir Putin, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Hassan Rouhani, "pulled offa major coup," he noted.

"They managed topull Turkey away fromNATO and intothe Russian/Iranian camp ona key issue," Bruno stressed.

He recalled that Erdogan was one ofthe first tochallenge Assad atthe start ofthe Syrian civil war in2011.

"Its a bit likea mob war now. If the United States doesn't give Russia 'a bloody nose' overthis, it will look weak inthe Middle East. It may even persuade some ofthe Gulf States toshift allegiances more infavor ofMoscow and Tehran thanWashington and Riyadh. One key Gulf State, Qatar, appears tohave already done this," he concluded.

Head ofthe Riyadh-based Center forMedia and Arab-Russian Studies, Majed bin Abdulaziz Al Turki told Sputnik he believed the United Stetes and its allies would most likely conduct strikes againstSyria.
"It is expected that the Western countries will strike. This happened yesterday and was attributed tothe Israeli army," Al Turki, told Sputnik.

The issue appears tobe a competition ofinternational powers fortheir interests atthe expense ofthe interests ofthe countries ofthe Middle East, he added.

US Strike onSyria No Longer Forbidden Fruit forUS
"Its highly likely if not certain that the alleged chemical attack withchlorine (last year it was sarin) that, inthe total absence ofevidence, NATO (led bythe US, the UK, France) is being used tojustify and compel the US tointervene againstthe government ofBashar Assad," Bruno said.

The effort is tocomplete the step that Barack Obama did not take in2013, he noted.
"Obama looked forall possible ways toavoid becoming embroiled inSyria in2013. He was eventually 'forced toact' byproxy forces onthe ground. Now, we have towonder what more trouble can millions ofSyrians expect, afterhaving endured overseven years ofwar (and not a civil war, buta full-fledged international conflict)," the expert explained.

The attack onSyria no longer represents a red line toWashington, and this goes againstUS President Donald Trump's statements duringthe tenure ofhis predecessor Barack Obama, he recalled.

"A direct US strike againstDamascus presumably againstgovernment targets, something that remained a 'forbidden' fruit untilApril 8 now seems inevitable, unless Trump remembers what he tweeted onAugust 29, 2013: 'What will we get forbombing Syria besidesmore debt and a possible long term conflict? Obama needs Congressional approval.' But, given that Trump has already shown he has forgotten that tweet when he attacked a Syrian air base onApril 7, 2017, the chance ofhis memory being refreshed now is even slimmer," Bruno said.

US Will Ignore Lack ofUNSC Approval

THe United States will most likely ignore the fact that their military intervention overseas lacks approval ofthe UN Security Council, asit has done inthe past, Bruno said.
"Given precedents, (Iraq, Libya, etc.) the United States will have no hesitation ofstriking Syria withoutUNSC approval," he said.

The Syrian War is not a 'civil war,' buta proxy conflict betweenmajor powers, the expert noted.

"Its not just aboutAsad, ISIS[Daesh], the various Jaysh al-Islam and others. Its even more aboutTurkey, the US, the Arab monarchies, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Russia," he said.

If the United States conducts a military operation againstthe Syrian government, the United Nations will most likely ignore it, he said.

I dont expect any other reaction fromthe UN, incase ofa US strike, other thanthe same old supine apathy. The UN has a chance tospeak outnow, urging fora verification ofthe facts inlight ofwhat Russian and Syrian inspectors are saying aboutthe nature ofthe latest chemical attack: that its false. But, it does not matter. The West, led bythe US, is looking forexcuses toprevent Assad fromcompleting his victory and rebuilding Syria. The UN can scream untilall representatives are blue inthe face, it wont matter," Bruno said.

The decision totopple Assad was made years ago, and Washington seems tostubbornly push forit byany means, he concluded.
