Press TV- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says Iran and Russia have strategic relations and must continue their cooperation until the full restoration of peace and security to the war-ravaged country.
“Close relations and cooperation between Iran and Russia on Syria and peace and security in the region has been very effective and we should continue cooperation until the complete establishment of security to Syria and the region,” Rouhani said in a meeting with Chairman of Russia’s State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin in Tehran on Monday.
Iran has been offering Syria advisory military help upon request from the Syrian government. Moscow has also been providing military assistance to Damascus.
Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami said earlier this month that Iran is set to keep up its counter-terrorism cooperation with Russia until Syria and the entire region are fully cleansed of terrorist outfits.
“As promised to the Syrian nation and regional nations, this [counter-terrorism] cooperation will continue until the total annihilation of terrorists and the liberation of regional nations from the scourge of terrorism,” Hatami said after a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Shoigu, in Moscow.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian president pointed to the common stance of Tehran and Moscow on international issues and said some Western countries were making attempts to create problems for Russia as a big power in the region and the world.
Rouhani added that Iran also faced similar issues in the region and this was the reason why Tehran and Moscow must develop “closer cooperation” in the face of such problems.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran regards bilateral, regional and international Tehran-Moscow cooperation in favor of the two nations and the entire world, and the Iranian government is determined to expand all-out relations with Russia,” he pointed out.
The chairman of Russia’s State Duma, for his part, said Tehran and Moscow were facing common regional and global challenges.
Volodin expressed his country’s determination to reinforce unity with Iran and draw up a roadmap to counter challenges.
