President Rouhani attends Ankara trilateral meeting on Syria

April 5, The Iran Project - Visiting Iranian President Hassan Rouhani arrived in Ankara on Tuesday (April 3) and was officially welcomed by his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip in the same city on Wednesday.

While in Ankara, Rouhani held separate meetings with Erdogan, his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and attended a trio talks on Syria.

The trilateral talks between Rouhani, Erdogan and Putin,as guarantors of ceasefire in Syria, kicked off Wednesday, on the same day that the Russian capital hosted Moscow International Security Conference, which was attended by defense ministers and other high-ranking officials from about 30 countries.

During the summit in Ankara, the parties in a statement highlighted the fact that there is no military solution to Syrian crisis and expressed their opinion that there could be no military solution to the Syrian conflict.

Talking to Erdogan, Rouhani said the Astana Peace Process and the efforts of the three countries have resulted the best successes in the war on terrorists.

Meanwhile, Erdogan, for his part, described the cooperation between Iran and Turkey as constructive and positive in resolving regional issues, especially the fight against terrorism and terrorist groups, and called for the development and strengthening of relations between the two countries in this regard.

At a bilateral meeting with Putin in Ankara, President Rouhani stated that all efforts should be focused to stop Saudi war against Yemeni people.

In Turn, Putin referred to positive, close Iran-Russia cooperation and relations in various bilateral, regional and international fields, especially the Syrian issue and called for permanent cooperation and dialogue by the authorities of the two countries in developing Tehran-Moscow relations.

Addressing the troika meeting, President Rouhani criticized any efforts for disintegration of Syria, adding that Iran, Turkey and Russia play key role in Astana talks as in the absence of such coordination between these countries, the current situation in Syria had been much more complicated.

The important point about the trilateral summit in Ankara is total exclusion of Western countries, especially the United States, despite claims by Washington that it has been playing a leading role in the fight against terrorist groups in Syria.

A Turkish official noted that although Macron was willing to partake in the Ankara summit and Turkey agreed to his presence, he was finally excluded due to opposition from Iran.

The Ankara summit was the second such meeting among three countries presidents, the first of which was held in Russias resort city of Sochi on November 22 last year.

During the summit, it was decided that Tehran host the next round of the meeting but the date of the next meeting on Syria has not been set yet.

Eventually, President Rouhani ended his two-day visit in Ankara and returned home from Turkey on Wednesday night.
