IRNA � A member of the Tehran City Council confirmed on Wednesday that the mayor of Iran's capital has resigned.

'[Tehran Mayor] Mohammad-Ali Najafi has submitted his resignation to the City Council in writing,' said Ahmad Majed-Jame'i.

The news of the mayor's resignation was confirmed by a municipal official after earlier contradictory reports.

Tehran City Council will have a closed meeting at noon on Wednesday. It is said that the resignation is also on the agenda.
