Iran condoles with Russia over plane crash

FNA- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in a message on Saturday extended his condolences to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over the Antonov-26 plane crash in Syria that killed tens of Russian military personnel on board.

President Rouhani sympathized with Russian people and government over the plane crash that killed all the 39 people onboard the plane in Syria’s Lattakia province.

A Russian transport plane crashed in Syria killing all 39 people on board with the defense ministry saying the aircraft reportedly wasn’t shot down.

The Antonov-26 aircraft crashed at Russia’s Humeimim airbase in Lattakia province on Tuesday, Russian media quoted the ministry as saying.

Initial information suggested the crash may have been caused by a technical fault. The aircraft hit the ground about 500 meters short of the runway, the ministry said.

Thirty-three passengers and six crew members were on the aircraft when it went down at about 3pm Moscow time (12:00GMT). All of the people aboard were Russian military personnel.

The Humeimim airbase is the main site for Russia’s military campaign in Syria. The plane reportedly did not come under fire.

“Nobody survived,” the ministry’s statement said. “According to reports from the scene, no fire was delivered against the plane.”
