IRNA Madrid is willing to widen economic relations with Tehran and extend political consultations between the two countries, the visiting Spanish foreign minister said on Tuesday evening.

Alfonso Dastis made his remarks while speaking to reporters upon arrival in this Iranian capital for a three-day official visit.

About his Tehran visit, Dastis said he is planned to hold talks with the officials of the important Middle East country that is Iran.

The talks, as he said, will focus on ways to relieve tension in the region.

During his stay in Iran, Dastis along with the members of his delegation is to meet with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, Majlis (Parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani and Supreme Leader's advisor Ali Akbar Velayati.

The meetings are due to concentrate on the European Union's firm policy on keeping the July 2015 deal with Iran safe despite the threats made by the US President Donald Trump to withdraw from it.

Iran and the six world powers- US, UK, France, Russia, China and Germany- along with EU representative signed a landmark nuclear deal on July 14, 2015.

As the Spanish foreign minister said, Iran nuclear deal should be kept alive to help make the region stable.

About his presence in Tehran for the purpose of promotion of bilateral relations, Dastis said it would be an opportunity for the Spanish companies to have access to a 80-million market.

Presently, some 1,400 Spanish companies are active in Iran, 450 of them as permanent exporters.
