Iran to act within its interests if US violates JCPOA: MP

IRNA A senior member of Iranian Majlis (pariament) said here on Wednesday that 'Iran will act on the basis of its interests if the US violates the July 2015 nuclear deal.'

'The US and the other sides of Iran Deal should understand that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is not renegotiable and changeable under any conditions,' Alaeddin Boroujerdi, chairman of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission said in a meeting held in Tehran.

In the meeting with chairman of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee David McAllister, Boroujerdi said Iran and Europe enjoy common viewpoints about strengthening regional security and stability, preserving JCPOA and countering terrorism.

'Iran welcomes all-out relations with the European countries,' the Iranian lawmaker said, adding the two sides have common interests in many issues.

Boroujerdi went on to say that Iran's principled policy is expansion of ties based on mutual respect with all European states.

If the two sides have sometimes downgraded the level of bilateral cooperation, it was due to decisions made under the impact of the US policies, the Majlis member added.

He further appreciated Europe for its support to the JCPOA, and expressed hope that continuation of the implementation of JCPOA would lead to further Iran-Europe cooperation in the areas of trade and economy.

Since the implementation day of the JCPOA in January 2016, the US has repeatedly violated the deal which many world leaders including the EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini have described as an international agreement that is so beneficial and cannot be broken unilaterally.

Talking on the issue of terrorism, the parliamentarian described it as a sinister phenomenon which has beset the region, Europe and the world in recent years.

Boroujerdi added Iran welcomes counter-terrorism cooperation with Europe.

On the issue of Yemen, the lawmaker criticized the Europeans' silence on the massacre of the Yemeni people.

'We expect the European Parliament to be the voice of the innocent and oppressed Yemenis,' said Boroujerdi.

He added the European Parliament should internationally express its support for the Yemeni people.
