Kremlin underscores fundemental importance of Syria's territorial integrity



Sputnik- Kremlin closely follows Turkey's operation in Syria's northwestern Afrin district, the Russian representatives are in contact with both Damascus and Ankara on this issue, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday.




We still believe that the principle ofpreserving Syrias territorial integrity is fundamental. Of course, we are closely monitoring the humanitarian aspects that are connected withwhat is happening now inthe Afrin district, Peskov told reporters, commenting onthe issue.

The Kurdish-ledSyrian Democratic Forces(SDF) have not shelled the southern Turkish city ofReyhanli, Rodi Osman, a representative ofSyrian Kurdistan toRussia, told Sputnik onMonday.

On Sunday, Turkish authorities said that atleast one civilian was killed and 46 others injured afterthe city ofReyhanli inHatay province was shelled fromthe northern Syrian district ofAfrin, where theTurkish forceshave been conducting an operation againstthe Kurdish forces. In addition, seven people were injured inthe city ofKilis. Ankara has accused the SDF ofthe shelling.

On Saturday, Turkey launched OperationOlive Branchagainstthe Kurdish forces inAfrin. Ankara stressed that operation is directed exclusively againstthe terrorists.On Sunday, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim confirmed the start ofthe ground operation inthe region. Damascus condemned Turkey's attack onAfrin, equating it with "aggression".
