Record-breaking: Iranian woman radio commentator reports live for 10H


Sputnik - In a country where certain jobs, such as radio presenter and reporter, are dominated by men, one woman is sending ripples through the conservative society. Sputnik Iran spoke to Maedeh Alaghmand, a sports commentator who set a new record in Iran as she commented live on kabaddi matches for 10 hours.




Maedeh Alaghmand has been working inradio for16 years. She successfully passed the test fordiction and became one ofthe few female reporters and radio presenters inthe country.
My birth asthe host took place onthe radio station called Youth. In 2002, I started working forthe Iranian State TV and Radio Company, I worked there for4 years, then there were some events, I had tofinish my university, so I was transferred toradioTehran where I worked fornine years, Maedeh said.


Later onshe returned tothe State Radio Company, where taking intoaccount her experience inpreparing sports programs, aswell asworking onradio Tehran and other radio and television channels, she was transferred tothe sports section.

Maedeh specializes inreporting onvolleyball, badminton and aerobics. She also has experience injudging, which Maedeh acquired atthe women's badminton championship amongteams fromMuslim countries.
Recalling one ofthe saddest moments inher professional life, Maedeh told Sputnik that she got selected tothe list ofreportersforone ofthe world championships inSouth Korea, butin the end she was replaced bya man.State Radio Company never and underno circumstances will send a woman ona business trip forinternational competitions. But the director ofRadio Sport was againstmy trip toIncheon. My name was crossed out, and they told me that they had put a man inmy place. How I cried back then! the radio presenter said.

According toMaedeh, sportscommentatorsshould not use too much sports terminology, because very few people understand it.
It is important toexplain tothe listeners different moments ofthe game simply. I, forexample, cannot tell the listeners duringthe badminton game and now there will be a blow called, In the radio it is necessary tosay a strong attack hit was carried out".


Recently, Maedeh was working asa female reporter inthe Iranian province ofGolestan, where she set a new record inIranian media.

I beat a 40-year record sincethe Islamic Revolution. I am the first woman toreport for10 hours onAsian kabaddi games, she said.

Kabaddi is a contact team sport popular inSouth Asia.

Speaking abouther plans forthe future, the radio commentator said that she plans torelease a program forwomen, because there are very few women reporters and presenters inIranian television and radio broadcasting.
