EU top diplomat hails extending Irans sanction waiver

IRNA - High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy welcomed US Presidents decision to extend Iran sanctions waiver.

'It is positive that yesterday [Friday] President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States will respect their commitments, extending the waiver on nuclear-related sanctions foreseen by the deal. Federica Mogherini wrote on her personal website on Saturday.

US President Donald Trump, who had said his administration would decertify the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, decided on Friday to extend the sanctions waiver to the country for the third time as a part of the landmark deal officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The deal is working; the International Atomic Energy Agency has certified it nine times already, and it is crucial for the security of Europe and the world., she said, referring to the recent meeting held in Brussels with the attendance of the foreign ministers of Iran, France, the UK and Germany.

Our meeting in Brussels was also the opportunity to discuss other themes that are not related to the nuclear deal, as the last weeks protests in Iran, the tensions in the Middle East and Irans ballistic missiles program, she said

There are issues we Europeans are concerned about, which we are committed to tackling with even greater determination, outside the scope of the nuclear deal, Mogherini noted.

She went on to say that the deal was negotiated on the basis of a UN mandate that limited its scope very clearly.

For the European Union, the Middle East is a strategic region: stability, peace and security in the region are linked directly to our own stability, peace and security. And we are determined to protect them, she said.
