US Treasury to impose new sanctions on Iran



Sputnik - The Trump administration is expected to announce new sanctions against Iran soon, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said during a White House briefing on Thursday.




"I am expecting newsanctionsonIran, we continue tolook atthem," Mnuchin told reporters.

Earlier, Acting Assistant Secretary ofState forNear Eastern Affairs David Satterfield said intestimony beforethe US Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Washington plans touseaggressive sanctionstodiminish the influence ofIran inSyria.

Also, Under Secretary forPublic Diplomacy and Public Affairs Steve Goldstein said duringa press briefing that US President Donald Trump will make an announcement onwhether he will recertify the Iran nuclear agreement either onThursday or Friday morning.

"The President will make a decision based onall the information he has," Goldstein said onThursday. "I would expect an announcement either later today or tomorrow morning."

In October 2017, Trump refused tocertify Iran's compliance withtheJCPOA, agreement which stipulates a gradual lifting ofsanctions imposed onIran inexchange forTehran maintaining peaceful nature ofits nuclear program, butstopped short ofpulling the United States outof the pact, prompting condemnation fromother members ofthe P5+1 that had brokered deal.
