EU confirms Iran nuclear deal works as US faces deadline for sanctions waiver


Sputnik - On January 9, the US State Department announced that the US administration was expected to decide on extending the Iran sanctions waiver on Friday.




EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has confirmed that the 2015 Iran deal is delivering its main goal ofkeeping the nuclear program incheck.

The bloc expects all parties tocomply withcommitments underthe agreement, the top EU diplomat added.

However, according toher, the European Union has expressed concern ata meeting withIranian officials overthe Islamic Republic's ballistic missile program and tensions inthe region.

Speaking atthe press conference followingthe meeting, French Foreign Minister Le Drian stated that there is no reason tocease the implementation ofthe nuclear deal withIran asTehran complies withthe agreement.

According toBritish Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, no one has so far came upwith a good alternative tothe 2015 nuclear deal, however, it is upto those who oppose it topropose a better option.

At the same time, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said that it is absolutely necessary tohave the Iran deal ata time when North Korea is seeking nuclear weapons.

Trump Expected toExtend Sanctions Relief toIran This Week

On January 9, the US State Department announced that the US administration was expected todecide onextending the Iran sanctions waiver onFriday asTrump now faces a January 13 deadline onrecertifying the nuclear deal.

According toAP citing unnamed officials and sources familiar withthe matter, US President Donald Trump is expected toextend sanctions relief toIran aspart ofthe 2015 nuclear deal this week.

At the same time, Reuters reported citing administration sources that while Trump's top advisers are expected recomment him extend Iran's relief fromsanctions, it, however, is likely tobe accompanied bynew sanctions againstTehran.

Speaking ata joint press conference withhis Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said earlier this week that Tehran regretted that one ofthe parties tothe nuclear deal didn't fulfill its obligations underthe agreement butmade attempts tohamper its implementation instead.

In October 2017, Trump refused tocertify that Iran was incompliance withthe agreement butstopped short ofpulling the United States outof the pact, prompting condemnation fromother members ofthe P5+1 that had brokered the historic deal.

The Iran deal, also known asthe JCPOA, that was signed inJuly 2015 byTehran and the P5+1 group ofnations the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany, stipulates a gradual lifting ofsanctions imposed onthe Islamic Republic inexchange forthe country maintaining peaceful nature ofits nuclear program.
