Iran bans English in primary schools - Reports



Sputnik - Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has reportedly said that early learning of the English language paves the way for the West's "cultural invasion" of Iran.




The head ofthe state-run High Education Council, Mehdi Navid-Adham, said tolocal TV onSunday that English classes inprimary schools are "against laws and regulations." He added that English was no longer part ofthe educational curriculum. High school students will keep learning English, the official added.
Accroding toMehdi Navid-Adham, primary schools will now focus onthe Farsi language and classes ofIranian culture.


The news comes afteran announcement fromIrans Revolutionary Guard Corps regarding recent protests. The Revolutionary Guard declared that the demonstrations had been orchestrated withthehelp ofexternal forces, including the United States and Britain, and had been successfully suppressed.

Earlier inJanuary, Iranian Ambassador tothe United Nations Gholam Ali Khoshroo said duringan emergency UN Security Council meeting that Tehran had "hard evidence" proving protests were "directed fromabroad." The meeting was called bythe US, which has repeatedly accused Iranian authorities ofcracking downon pro-democracy protesters.

A wave ofprotests has swept acrossthe country inrecent weeks, withthousands ofpeople taking part indemonstrations. At least 21 people have been killed and over400 hundred more arrested asa result ofthe unrest. However, most ofthose detained have been subsequently released, according tosources inpolice.

Reports ofthe ban have already aroused reaction onsocial networks.
