Iranian authorities remove Instagram temporary block - Reports



Sputnik News- The Iranian authorities opened access to the Instagram photo-sharing app, the Mehr news agency reported Friday, adding that Telegram messaging app still remains blocked.




The Instagram and Telegram social media apps were blockedon December 31, 2017, asthey were being used byactivists toexchange messages aboutthe rallies.

As Iranian Information and Communications Technology Minister Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi has explained onJanuary 1, the restricted access tosocial networks amidongoing protests againstthe government's economic and social policy was a temporary measure.

Anti-government protests have been blazing acrossIran sinceDecember 28 asa response toworsening economic conditions inthe country, high fuel and food prices, unemployment, inflation and air pollution. The social unrest has resulted insome 20 deaths and about450 detentions.

Tehranhas stated that the people ofIran have the"constitutional right"toprotest peacefully overeconomic and social problems, butalso said that forcessupported fromabroad, including fromthe US, Israel andSaudi Arabia, were involved inthe protests, aiming todestabilize the country.

On January 4, the country's top prosecutor stated directly the foreign powers behindthe unrest:US, Israel and Saudi Arabia, naming a CIA official asbeing the alleged mastermind ofthe protests.

The protests were announced asover byMaj. Gen.Mohammad Ali Jafari, the chief ofthe Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps(IRGC) onJanuary 2, when he stated that the riot ofthe year "had failed."
