Top officials react to recent protests in Iran

January 1, The Iran Project - In reaction to the recent protests in Tehran and a number of other major cities, Iranian officials stressed the significant of national unity and urged the people to be alert against the enemy's fraudulent penetration and exploitation.

Several top Iranian officials including President Hassan Rouhani, Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami, Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani-Fazli and Chairman for the Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security of Majlis (Parliament) Alaeddin Boroujerdi reacted to the events and incidents in recent days.

The protests started with the call of certain social network abusers under the pretext of high prices and unemployment.

Addressing a session of the cabinet, President Rouhani underlined, This should be clear for all that we are a nation of freedom and based on the Constitution and citizenship rights, the people are completely free for criticizing and expressing their protests.

"But the procedure of expressing criticism and protest should be in such a way that would lead to the betterment of public life and countrys situation," he said.

General Hatami stated that people's demands could be met under peace, security and order in the framework of the law, adding that the world arrogance and enemies of Iran are after creating insecurity and instability in the country.

"We should try to abort all their plots through national solidarity, unity and integrity," he said, noting, The vigilant Iranian people who care about the issues of order, security and law will foil any plots against the country.

He stressed that the government, Majlis (Parliament) and Judiciary are determined to follow up the people's claims in order to solve their problems.

Referring to the misuse of the recent events by some individuals in the social networks, the interior minister said "They are after causing violence and fear. Of course, such behavior will be smashed."

Meanwhile, Boroujerdi said the enemies of the Islamic Revolution exploit the recent events, and provoke and lead the protests, adding, The recent events root in hesitating to timely approach the problems imposed on the people.

"A big portion of the recent gatherings is the result of arrangements made by foreign-based anti-Islamic Revolution elements; they provided a large propagation and abused the feeling and demands of the people," said Boroujerdi.
