Trump's 'gamble': Jerusalem decision may cause war - Iran's parliament speaker



Sputnik - Iran's parliament speaker Ali Larijani spoke about Trump's Jerusalem move as well as Syrian peace settlement talks after meeting Russia's State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin in Islamabad.




On Trump's Jerusalem Decision

The United States' decision torecognize Jerusalem asthe capital ofIsrael will provoke aggression and "war" betweenPalestinians and Israelis, Iran's parliament speaker Ali Larijani said onSunday.

"People do not want tostay silent, there will be a rebellion, a war. This is a gamble, it is high time for [US President Donald] Trump tounderstand what is happening," Larijani said onthe sidelines ofthe conference devoted tothe fight againstterrorism.

The parliament's speaker pointed outthat the United States was trying tosplit the Middle Eastern region. He also refuted US remarks that Washington had defeated terrorism inSyria.

"That was you [United States], who created it [terrorism] there," Larijani added.

On December 6, Trump announced his decision torecognize Jerusalem asthe capital ofIsrael and instructed the US State Department tomove the US embassy inIsrael fromTel Aviv toJerusalem. The decision caused mass criticism acrossthe world.

On Geneva Talks

Tehran is not expecting a breakthrough inSyrian settlement atGeneva talks and views the Astana process asmore prospective, Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani said Sunday.
"I think there will be no miracle atGeneva talks. Geneva process is only slowing downthe political settlement. Astana process [on the contrary] is a breeding ground forsettlement," Larijani said atthe anti-terror conference inPakistani capital ofIslamabad.


The lawmaker also noted that the presence ofthe United States innorthern Syria would only have destructive consequences.

Syria has been engulfed ina civil war since2011, withgovernment forces fighting numerous opposition factions and terrorist groups. The UN Security Council resolution 2254 adopted inDecember 2015 urges UNSC member states tosupport efforts tointroduce a ceasefire and calls fortalks betweenthe Syrian government and opposition.

The international community has taken a number ofsteps aimed atsettling the crisis, including throughnegotiations inGeneva and Astana. The eighth roundof Astana talks took place earlier this week. Russia, Turkey and Iran, the guarantors ofthe ceasefire inSyria, agreed toestablish a working group onthe release ofdetainees, adopted a statement onhumanitarian mine clearance inthe country and made the decision tomeet inRussia's southern resort city ofSochi onJanuary 19-20 toprepare forthe Syrian National Dialogue Congress, all inthe course ofAstana-8 talks.

The eighth roundof Geneva talks took place fromNovember 28 toDecember 14. The roundwas the longest one sincethe talks beginning, however it has not brought any breakthrough. During the negotiations, the Damascus delegation went back toSyria forseveral days afterrefusing toparticipate due tothe oppositions call onPresident Bashar Assad toleave, which had been considered byDamascus representatives asa precondition forthe talks.
