Tehran wants Gazprom to join Iran-Oman gas pipeline project - Deputy Minister



Sputnik News- Iran is interested in Gazproms participation in the construction of the Iran-Oman gas pipeline, Iranian Deputy Petroleum Minister and Managing Director of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) Ali Kardor stated in an interview with the Gazprom magazine, published on Friday.



"[NIOC and Gazprom] are considering a possibility ofthe joint implementation ofa number ofabsolutely new projects, including Iran LNG, Farzad-A, and Farzad-B, North Pars. Besides, there has been huge interest inthe prospects ofthe joint construction ofIran-Pakistan-India and Iran-Oman gas pipelines," Kardor said.


In November, Gazprom and the NIOC signed a memorandum ofunderstanding, which opened the way toa study intothe prospects ofcooperation inthe development ofgas fields inIran, gas transportation and monetization. Among them was a project tosupply gas fromIran toIndia throughPakistan.

In December, Gazprom, the NIOC and Iran's Oil Industry Pension, Saving and Staff Welfare Fund signed a memorandum ofunderstanding onthe Iran liquefied natural gas (LNG) project.

The first phase of the Iran LNG project envisages the construction of two technological lines for liquefying gas with a capacity of 5.25 million tonnes per year. The second phase provides for an increase in productivity of up to 21 million tonnes per year by creating two additional processing lines.

The Iran-Oman gas pipeline project is expected toconnect Irans gas reserves withOmani consumers and LNG plants so that Oman could re-export the gas. Following the talks betweenIranian and Omani officials back inFebruary, it was reported that Iran would export 28.3 million cubic meters ofgas per day toOman througha direct pipeline, which would bypass the United Arab Emirates.
