Russian president lauds Iran role in stopping war in Syria

IRNA Russian president on Wednesday lauded the role played by Iran and Turkey in stopping civil war in Syria.

If Iran and Turkey had not played a role, 'the war in Syria would not have stopped,' Vladimir Putin said addressing the trilateral summit which was held in the Black Sea resort of Sochi at the presence of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Putin voiced hope that the Sochi summit would lead to boost Syria sovereignty.

The militants in Syria have received a decisive blow and a real chance has appeared to bring to an end many years of civil war, Putin said, adding that a political settlement in Syria is now the strategic task'.

The political process 'wont be easy', said Putin. It will require compromises and concessions from all sides, including the Syrian government. I am counting on Russia, Iran and Turkey to make the utmost effort to ensure that this bears results.

The tripartite meeting of the presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkey was held in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi on Wednesday. The meeting was aimed at discussing the results of Syria peace talks held in Astana, Kazakhstan, and the beginning of political process within Syria. The achievements in the fight against Takfiri terrorism in Syria as well as future steps to be taken to bring about sustainable stability in the country was also on the agenda of the meeting. Iran, Russia and Turkey are the main guarantors of the peace talks in Astana.
