The agreement which could take the country closer to a plan to move toward smart cities and automated utilities was signed between Ericsson and the Mobile Telecommunication Company of Iran (Hamrah Aval) the countrys largest mobile operator on the sidelines of Iran Telecom Fair 2017 in Tehran.
Based on it, the Swedish communications giant would provide Iran with the know-how to implement the IoT in the country. No further details on the agreement have been announced by the media.
Mahmoud Vaezi, Irans former minister of communications and information technology, said in February that the country had been working on the development of the IoT over the past two years.
Vaezi said a special committee had been formed to study the issue and that certain steps had been devised for adopting the required regulations.
He emphasized that a pilot project to use the IoT had already been launched in capital Tehran, adding that the preliminaries for launching the project at a larger scale were being prepared.
As a network of physical objects, the IoT enables items such as devices, vehicles, buildings and others to collect and exchange data.
This technology allows the objects to be monitored and controlled remotely through a computer-based system and is meant to provide consumers increased convenience.
Irans media reported last May that the countrys researchers had launched a small-scale IoT project in eastern Tehran. The project was the first of its kind in the Middle East and officially took Iran to the club of countries that are using the technology.
