Senior MP criticizes detention of Iranian lady in Australia

IRNA - A senior member of the Iranian Majlis (Parliament) said on Thursday that the US has acted against international conventions when it requested detention of a pregnant Iranian national in Australia.

Heshmatollah Falahat-Pisheh, a member of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said detention of Negar Qodsi-Kani was clearly a violation of human rights.

Negar Qodsi-Kani, an Iranian woman residing in Australia, has been jailed by the Australian judicial officials since June 16, 2017 over alleged charges of violating the US commercial laws.

In time of her arrest, Negar was pregnant and now she is in her last months of pregnancy facing inappropriate conditions inside the prison such as poor access to healthy foods.

Australian officials have ignored Irans repeated calls for improving her conditions and the court handling her case has recently ruled out her appeal for freedom on bail.

Since the Iranian lady, who was arrested on charges of breaching the US trade regulations, was pregnant at the time of her arrest, she should not have been treated the way she is now even if she had violated US trade regulations, Falahat-Pisheh said commenting on Negars situation.

The nature of such accusations is not acceptable for Iran, because a pregnant woman should not be detained due to an act deserving no legal punishment, said the Iranian MP.

He added that during the newly-ended meeting of Europe-Iran Forum in Zurich, the Switzerland, Helga Schmid, the representing European Union, announced that Europe has decided to stay with Iran if the US withdrew Iran Nuclear Deal also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The Iranian mother waiting for her first delivery migrated to Australia six years ago along with her husband through legal procedures, and now in utmost disappointment from enforcement of justice, she and her child has pinned their hope to public opinion and humanitarian supports.
