Erdogan in Tehran to confer with top Iranian officials
October 4, The Iran Project Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan heading a high-profile delegation arrived in Tehran today to hold talks with top Iranian officials on Wednesday.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani officially welcomed Erdogan in the Iranian capital on Wednesday. The two sides also held talks and attended a joint press conference.

Attending a joint press conference, Rouhani said that Iran and Turkey have been developing political, regional, cultural and economic relations in recent years, reiterating that important decisions have been made by both countries in today's meeting and also in joint meeting on strategic cooperation.

He pointed to promoting banking ties between Iran and Turkey and also trade with national currency as important decision made by both sides.

Meanwhile, Erdogan said Turkey will take stronger steps in retaliation for the Iraqi Kurdish referendum last week, having already taken some measures in coordination with the Iraqi central government and Iran.

He also stated the goal of raising Turkish-Iranian trade volume to $30 billion from $10 billion remained on the agenda and the two countries would conduct trade in their own currencies to limit foreign exchange pressures.

Iran and Turkey also signed four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in Tehran on Wednesday.

The Iranian and Turkish officials inked the cooperation documents at the presence of President Rouhani and his Turkish counterpart.

The MoUs were inked between the two countries' central banks as well as state radio and televisions.

National Library and Archives Organization of Iran (NLAI) and State Archives of the Prime Minister's of the Republic of Turkey signed cooperation documents, as well.

Meanwhile, Erdo?an conferred on Wednesday with Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on issues of mutual interests along with regional developments.

Referring to referendum in northern Iraq, Ayatollah Khamenei told Turkish President Erdogan that the US and foreign powers are unreliable and after creating a new Israel in the Middle East.

While stressing on call for expansion of ties, the Iranian Leader described Tehran-Ankara agreement and cooperation very significant and influential in the Islamic world.

If Iran and Turkey reach an agreement in dealing with an issue, facing all these problems in the Islamic world from Eastern Asia and Myanmar to Northern Africa, that agreement would assuredly be realized and the benefits will be for the two countries and the whole Islamic world, the Leader noted.
