Turkey closes borders with Iraqi Kurdistan Region

IRNA Turkish government closed Silopi- Habur border gate, a crossing point into the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.

The move to close the border crossing was taken by Ankara on Monday as the Kurdish people in the semi-autonomous Iraqi region went to the polls to vote in an independence referendum, despite warnings by the regional nation about possible consequences.

According to Turkish media, only Turkish trucks are permitted to enter Iraq, using the border gate.

Turkey has been conducting a military drill in this area for the past eight days.

Closing the border crossings was among decisions made by Turkey National Security Council.

While Iraq has lately been involved in counter-terrorism operations against the terrorist group of Daesh (ISIS) in its western areas, it is now being faced with new challenges over holding a referendum in the Kurdistan Region which is governed by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), with the city of Erbil as its capital.

Efforts are underway both from inside and outside Iraq to solve the existing problem between Baghdad and Erbil.

An independence referendum is approved by Iraqi Kurdistan parliament to be held on September 25 despite harsh oppositions from the federal government in Baghdad, and warnings from neighboring countries on the repercussions.
