Tillerson admits IAEA reports indicate Iran in compliance with nuclear deal

Sputnik News- After a ministerial meeting at the UN the US Secretary of State said that International Atomic Energy Agency reports show that Tehran is compliant with the nuclear accord.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said after a ministerial meeting at the UN on the Iran nuclear agreement that reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) show that Tehran is compliant with the accord.

"From the technical standpoint the IAEA reports continue to indicate and confirm that Iran is in technical compliance with the agreement," Tillerson said during a press conference in New York.

He noted however, that the United Stated will continue closely watching Iran's activities withrespect toabiding bythe nuclear agreement.

"We are going tocontinue tomonitor Iran's activities, and we will take additional steps, none ofwhich put us inany way contrary toour obligations underthe JCPOA," Tillerson said. "We are fully compliant withtheJCPOA."

The US Secretary ofState Rex Tillerson also said that he shook hands withIran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif duringtalks onthe Iran nuclear accord earlier inthe night.

"It was a good opportunity tomeet [and] shake hands," Tillerson said. "The tone was very matter offact. There was no anger or yelling. It was an exchange ofhow we see this agreement very differently." He said that ministerial talks atthe UN related tothe Iran nuclear deal were political rather not technical. "It was not a technical discussion, it was a political discussion So we had a very open and candid exchange ofall the parties tothat agreement. I hope it was useful toothers. I found it useful tohear their perspectives," Tillerson said.

In July 2015, Iran and the P5+1 group ofnations comprised ofthe United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany, signed the the Joint Comprehensive Plan ofActio, which stipulates lifting ofnuclear-related sanctions imposed onIran inexchange forTehran maintaining the peaceful nature ofits nuclear program. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump called the agreement "an embarrassment" tothe United States duringaspeech tothe UN General Assembly.
Rex Tillerson told reporters duringa press conference atthe UN that Trump had heard arguments onboth sides ofthe Iran nuclear deal and it was time tomake a decision oncertifying the agreement.


"The president hes heard the arguments fromboth sides," Tillerson said. "Weve had sufficient time toget our own kind ofdirect understanding ofthis agreement and how it functions. I think the time has come fora decision tobe made."
