No obligation on Iran beyond previous agreements: Iran's nuclear chief

IRNA - Vice-President and Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi said in Vienna on Monday that Iran does not see any obligation beyond those of 'the safeguards, the JCPOA and the Additional Protocol.

After a 'fruitful' meeting with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano on Monday, Salehi told the press that the IAEA chief was 'thankful' of Iran's being committed to the JCPOA and in return Iran is 'satisfied' with the IAEA that have been able to carry on the tasks impartially.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 61st IAEA General Conference which kicked off on Monday in the Austrian capital.

Iran is committed to the safeguards, the 2015 nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the Additional Protocol, but feels no further obligations beyond them, Salehi stressed.

He added, 'There were other issues about the projects that we undertake with the assistance of the IAEA. Four major technical projects were raised; and the IAEA has shown its readiness to assist us in promoting these four projects.'

Iran has always been emphasizing that the UN nuclear watchdog has to act independently regardless of suggestions made by other parties and as is stated in the Agency's Oath of Office which was again read by the IAEA chief during Monday's session. So far, Iran believes that the IAEA has succeeded to stay committed to its Oath of Office, particularly in regard to the JCPOA, Salehi said.

The 61st IAEA General Conference kicked off on Monday in Vienna, Austria. At the week-long annual conference representatives from 168 member-states will talk about various topics related to the nuclear issues.

During his address to the GC meeting, Salehi said, 'The American administration's overtly hostile attitude and actual foot-dragging policies and measures aimed at undermining the nuclear deal and blocking Irans legitimate benefits from its full and unimpeded implementation are contrary to the letter and spirit of JCPOA.'

He added, 'We remain confident that the Agency, and for that matter, the Director-General, will resist such unacceptable demands and continue to execute the Agencys irreplaceable technical supervisory role with strict objectivity, fairness and impartiality, including protection of sensitive, technical and industrial information attained through inspections. The Agencys success in this important and critical challenge will benefit everybody and enhance its international credibility. Serious and active cooperation of other participants to the deal, and in a larger sense, the members of the IAEA, will indeed make a positive contribution to this end.'

The issues discussed in the conference include nuclear security, strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of the safeguards of the IAEA.
