Iran FM urges concerted global effort for peace in Syria

IRNA Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has called on the global community to make a coordinated effort for establishing peace in Syria.

There should be 'a concerted effort to move towards peace in Syria', Zarif told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) correspondent in New York Monday evening.

'We have been working in Astana with Turkey and Russia in order to ensure the de-escalation in some areas, and we hope that we can extend that' Zarif added, referring to the zones the three countries involved in the Astana talks have agreed to create in order to ease the conflicts in some areas in Syria.

During the recent Astana talks in the capital of Kazakhstan, Turkey, Iran and Russia agreed on creating de-escalation zones that cover some parts of Eastern Ghouta and the provinces of Idlib, Homs, Latakia, Aleppo and Hama.

The sixth round of Astana negotiations over the Syrian crisis was held last Thursday with a focus on the creation of de-escalation zones in Syria.

The Iranian Foreign Minister who is accompanying President Hasssan Rouhani in his visit to New York for participating and addressing the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, also emphasized that the global campaign against terrorism and extremism should be continued.
