Why 'US will shoot itself in the foot' in case of new sanctions against Iran

Sputnik - Despite Washingtons persistent anti-Iranian policy, foreign investors will not turn away from the Iranian market, Iranian economic expert and journalist Ahmad Hadem Al-Melle told Sputnik. According to him, if there are new American sanctions against Iran they are unlikely to be supported by US allies.

After the final agreement onthe Iranian nuclear program was signed and sanctions againstTehran were subsequently lifted, the country has been enjoying unprecedented investment flow intodifferent parts ofits economy. Western companies such asSiemens, Total, Volkswagen, Renault and Airbus are already running major projects inIran.

In an interview withSputnik Iran, Al-Melle, an adviser atthe Industrial Development & Renovation Organization ofIran (IDRO) and the editor-in-chief ofthe Iranian business newspaper Eghtesad-? Bartar, said that foreign investors benefit fromthe current economic environment inIran.

The oil and gas industry aswell asthe transport sector are believed tobe the most promising, witha total of20megaprojects forforeign investorsalready being implemented. According tothe expert, the number ofnew deals is steadily growing.
"Over the last two months, we have signed atleast four major projects, including two deals withFrench oil giant Total and carmaker Renault. There is also a deal withRussias company Transmashholding onthe manufacturing ofrailway cars. Finally, there is a railway construction project witha Chinese company. And more new projects are coming," Al-Melle said.

As Washington is reportedly considering a new roundof economic sanctions againstTehran, the expert underscored that European andRussian companiesalready cooperating withIran are "not scared totake onthe US."

He also suggested that the possible new sanctions would have an insignificant effect onthe Iranian economy and are likely tobackfire onthe US economy.
"The matter ofsanctions has two sides. Of course, the US wants topunish Iran withadditional restrictions, butif it does it will also shoot itself inthe foot," Al-Melle pointed out.

Moreover, there is another problem forthe US concerning the possible introduction ofnewsanctions againstIran. According tothe expert, US allies inEurope would be very unlikely tosupport such a move.
"The US needs solidarity fromits allies toefficiently exert pressure overIran. However, many ofWashingtons partners now believe that new sanctions would be a violation ofinternational law. Moreover, they dont want toface economic losses due toWashingtons political ambitions. Even if there are some new sanctions they will not generate the desired effect forthe American establishment," Al-Melle concluded.

Earlier this week, Reutersreported, citing US officials, that US PresidentDonald Trumpwants a more hard-line policy towardsIran. In particular, the White House is allegedly discussing a new stance onthe 2015 final deal onTehrans nuclear program, including tougher economic sanctions if Iran violates the deal.
