Senior cleric urges OIC to convene on Myanmar genocide

IRNA - Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi urged the Islamic countries' foreign ministers to convene aimed at reviewing the genocide of Muslims in Myanmar and oblige the international bodies to implement necessary measures to meet that end.

Touching upon the silence of the world over the atrocities against members of the Muslim minority in Myanmar, the grand ayatollah urged the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to implement essential measures in this respect.

He added that the Buddhists have decided to annihilate the Muslims in Myanmar which account for two percent of the country's population.

Referring to the escalation of atrocities against Muslims in Myanmar, Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi underscored that even Taliban has condemned the genocide of Muslims in that country.

Referring to the indifference of world regarding the Muslims' massacre in Myanmar, the grand ayatollah expressed surprise over the UN Security Council's silence on genocide in the Asian country.

Pointing to the butchery of over 200,000 Muslims in Myanmar, the senior cleric underlined that if the Islamic countries hold a session to discuss the issue other international bodies would be prompted to address the case aimed at saving their face.

Prior to the 2015 Rohingya refugee crisis and the military crackdown in 2016 and 2017, the Rohingya population in Myanmar was around 1.1 to 1.3 million.

They reside mainly in the northern Rakhine townships.

Many Rohingyas have fled to the neighboring states. More than 100,000 Rohingyas in Myanmar live in camps for internally displaced persons and are not allowed by the authorities to leave.
