Zarif, Lavrov discuss JCPOA, Syria

IRNA Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov discussed issues pertaining to July 2015 nuclear deal known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and Syrian situation on phone on Thursday.

Russian Foreign Ministry announced in a statement on Thursday that the two ministers also shared views on bilateral issues as well as regional developments during the phone conversation.

Implementation of JCPOA, settlement of Syrian issues given the agreements reached in Astana Talks were among the topics dealt with by the two top diplomats, the statement said.

Creating safe zones in Syria to further extend sustainable ceasefire is the main deal in Astana Syrian talks which were initiated by Iran, Russia and Turkey.

Three countries signed de-escalation zones agreement in Syria during the fourth round of Astana Talks on May 4, covering regions in Idlib, Homs, Eastern Ghouta, Dara'a and Quneitra.

Stopping all war measures by the two conflicting sides including governmental forces and opposition, easing inhabitants' access to humanitarian aid, reconstruction of infrastructures, rehabilitation of refugees are among the items stipulated in the deal.

Lavrov said that Iran, Russia and Turkey as guarantors of Astana Syrian talks are trying to create the fourth secure zone in Idlib.
