Iran finishes runner-up at Wrestling World C’ships

MNA – National Iranian Greco-Roman wrestling squad collected three bronze medals to become vice-champion at 2017 Wrestling World Championships in Paris.


The Greco-Roman extravaganza got underway in the French capital of Paris on August 21-22 with 54 teams in attendance.

At the end of the tournament, Iranian wrestlers landed in the second position overall having begged three bronze trophies which brought home a total of 36 points.

Medal winners in the Persian outfit comprised Mohammad Ali Geraei (71kg), Saeid Abdevali (75kg) and Hossein Nouri (85kg). Meanwhile, Iran’s Mohammad Elyasi only managed to occupy the fifth place in the 66-kilogram weight group.

Team Rankings for the top six teams are as follow:

1. Russia, 46 points (0 gold medal, 2 silver, 2 bronze)

2. Iran, 36 (0-0-3)

3. Turkey, 34 (2-0-1)

4. Georgia, 30 (0-0-2)

5. Germany, 29 (1-1-1)

6. Armenia, 28 (2-0-0)
