Iranian MP slams US sanctions as ‘Clear Breach’ of JCPOA

Tasnim– A senior Iranian lawmaker denounced a recent move by the US Congress to impose fresh sanctions on the Islamic republic as a blatant violation of the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said the US government had pledged to lift all sanctions after the approval of the JCPOA.

However, he said, not only was the pledge not fulfilled completely, but the new US administration raised the number of sanctions against Iran, which is a “clear breach” of the JCPOA.

The parliamentarian went on to say that Washington’s conducts prove that there is no difference between Donald Trump and Barack Obama.

He further regretted that while Iran has remained committed to the JCPOA, the US has not met its obligations under the deal.

The Republican-controlled US House of Representatives passed a sweeping package of bills on Iran, Russia, and North Korea sanctions Tuesday in a 419-3 vote, sending the legislation to the Senate for almost certain passage and likely making it veto-proof.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, US, Britain, France, and Germany) on July 14, 2015, reached a conclusion over the text of the JCPOA. The accord took effect in January 2016 and was supposed to terminate all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran all at once, but its implementation has been hampered mainly due to US policies.
