Iran in no mood to renegotiate nuclear deal

Al-Monitor- The head of the Iranianparliaments influential National Security and Foreign Policy Commissionrejected any notionof renegotiating the nuclear deal agreed toby Iran and the five countries on the UNSecurity Council plus Germany (P5+1) just two years ago, ending a decadelong dispute. As a result of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, nuclear-related sanctions against Iran were lifted (non-nuclear sanctionsremain), and Iran agreed to curtail its nuclear program. Eager to undo President Barack Obamas legacy, current President Donald Trump has tasked his advisers with finding a way to scrap the deal. Iran is not taking the bait.

Iran willunder no conditionsundertake negotiations again about the nuclear deal, said Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the head of theNational Security and Foreign Policy Commission, on July 23. Boroujerdi added, None of the other countries that negotiated the nuclear deal with Iran have accepted Americas recommendation to negotiate again. He called Trumps desire to renegotiateanother example of America cheating, which can be viewed as an illogical action.

The interview with Boroujerdi was sparked by a July 21article in Foreign Policy reportingthatTrump is unhappywith Secretary of State Rex Tillersons reports with respect to Iranand has sidelined him to bring the review process onIranian compliance with the deal into the White House, where staff aremostly hawks on Iran. The State Department had been required to present a report on Iranian complianceevery 90 days, while in Iran, the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission is tasked with reviewing the terms of the deal every six months.
