Why Iran is unlikely to buy more Russian missile systems after S-300 purchase

Sputnik - Iran is unlikely to purchase Russia's anti-missile systems in future in addition to the already acquired S-300 systems as Tehran has technology to upgrade its own Bavar 373 systems, Jagath Zedvar, marketing and export development director of Aviation Industries Organization of Iran (IAIO), told Sputnik Tuesday.

ZHUKOVSKIY (Sputnik) In December 2016, Iran's ambassador inMoscow Mehdi Sanayee said thatRussia had finished executing the contractonsupplying Iran withdivisions ofS-300 missile systems.
"As you know we received fromRussia S-300 systems butbefore we received them we had made a similar Iranian version ofanti-missile system calledBavar 373surface-to-air missile system. I don't think we will have any deals inthis field inyears tocome because we already got the technology and we can advance it byourselves," Zedvar said onthe sidelines ofthe International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS-2015, which started onTuesday inthe Russian city ofZhukovskiy.

He also said that Iran plans toexpand cooperation withRussian manufacturers ofcivil aviation and, inparticular, sign a number ofcontracts withhelicopter spare parts' producers duringtheMAKS-2017.
"Nowadays and here atMAKS, Iran plans toexpand our cooperation withthe Russian helicopters' producers and vendors. As you know, we acquired different types ofhelicopters We are not planning tosign any big contracts duringMAKS butwe are expecting tosign memorandums ofunderstanding and small contracts withthe suppliers inthe civil aviation field, generally withthe helicopter parts' suppliers and ingeneral incivil aviation field," Zedvar said.

According toZedvar, Iran needs toprocure some components torepair the Russian-made helicopters.

"Besides, we need some help interms oftraining toimprove our capabilities forthe advance repair and the overhaul forMi-8 and Mi-17," Zedvar added.

The two states have a number ofprojects inthe sphere ofhelicopter industry cooperation. In late March, Russian Helicopters, a Moscow-based helicopter manufacturing company, announced that it signed a memorandum onpotential cooperation withthe Iranian state corporation IDRO Group, providing forestablishment ofa joint plant inIran toassembly Russian Ansat or Ka-226T light multirole helicopters.

The Iranian aviation industry will not be affected bythe new roundof the US sanctions againstTehran, Zedvar said.

Earlier inthe day, the US Treasuryannounced new sanctionstargeting 16 entities and individuals supporting Iranian military and Irans Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including through "the development ofunmanned aerial vehicles."
"This sanctions will not affect us aswe independently design, produce and repair our products. As we already manufacture insideIran the critical items, therefore these sanctions will have no effect onour activities. For example, these days we are passing some tests and I think inone year we will start fly tests ofour trainer fighter aircraft."

On June 16, Ali Akbar Velayati, a top adviser toIranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, noted that the US Senate's decision toimpose new sanctions was a clear violation oftheJoint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA)deal, signed byIran, the European Union and the so-called P5+1 group the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom, plus Germany in2015.
