Sputnik - Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif stated at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York that although he had no contacts with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, there are possibilities of engagement between Washington and Tehran in regards to the nuclear agreement in the future.





WASHINGTON (Sputnik) Earlier onMonday, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Tillerson would make a statement onthe Iran nuclear deal shortly.
"There are no communications betweenmyself and Secretary Tillerson," Zarif said onMonday. "It doesn't mean that there can't be possibilities forengagement withregard tonuclear deal we have always been open."


Zarif added that all countries inthe world should adopt a resolution tolegally ban and get rid ofnuclear weapons asa global safety measure.
"Two weeks ago we voted fora resolution tolegally ban nuclear weapons forall," Zarif said. "US did not even participate indeliberations in [the United Nations]. I think that's the way torid the world ofthese weapons ofmass nightmare.


A group ofUS Republican senators ina letter onJuly 12 called onTillerson toreject certifying that Iran is fulfilling its obligations underthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA) regarding its nuclear program.


The JCPOA was concluded inJuly 2015 betweenIran, the European Union and the P5+1 group ofnations: the United States, Russia, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and China. Under the terms ofthe agreement, nuclear-related sanctions onIran were lifted inexchange forassurances Tehran's nuclear program would remain peaceful.
