Moscow 'Categorically' disagrees with Washington on Iran's missile program

Sputnik News- Russia categorically disagrees with US claims that Iran's missile program is carried out in violation of a UNSC resolution on the issue as the United States and some other Western countries attempt to misrepresent the situation, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told Sputnik on Tuesday.

Earlier onTuesday, Ryabkov held a meeting inTehran withIranian Deputy Foreign Ministers Abbas Araghchi and Majid Takht-Ravanchi onthe implementation ofthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (CAPA).
"We discussed the situation withthe consideration ofthe Iranian dossier inthe framework ofthe implementation ofthe UN Security Council Resolution 2231, and concluded that there are also a number ofissues onwhich we have towork actively together," Ryabkov said.

According toRyabkov, some Western countries, including the United States, are attempting topaint the Iranian missile program ina false light, "present the case insuch a way that this program, including test launches ofballistic missiles, does not meet the requirements ofresolution 2231."

"We categorically disagree withthis," the Russian diplomat stressed.

In July 2015, the JCPOA was reached betweenIran and six international mediators, including the United States, toensure the peaceful nature ofthe country's nuclear program.

In January 2016, Irans compliance withthe terms ofthe JCPOA, verified bythe International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), allowed fora large part ofthe international anti-Iranian sanctions tobe lifted, including the deprivation ofaccess tofrozen assets, ban onpurchasing passenger planes, and sale ofoil and coal.

However, the new US administration imposed a new roundof sanctions againstIran inFebruary 2017 overits January medium-range ballistic missile test. Additionally, onApril 19, US Secretary ofState Rex Tillerson accused the Iranian government ofsponsoring terrorism and announced a JCPOA review, ordered bythe US president, that could potentially dissolve the agreement, while atthe same time confirming that Iran was fulfilling its obligations underthe JCPOA.
