Top French diplomat to visit Iran

Tasnim Foreign Minister of France Jean-Yves Le Drian is going to pay a visit to Iran in the coming months as part of efforts to expand Paris-Tehran relations, the French Foreign Ministry announced.

In a daily press briefing on Wednesday, French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, known as the Quai dOrsay, unveiled plans for an upcoming visit to Iran by Le Drian.

Jean-Yves Le Drian, minister for Europe and foreign affairs, hosted Javad Zarif in the context of Frances political dialogue with Iran on July 3, ahead of the Tehran visit by the Quai dOrsays secretary general. At Mr. Zarifs invitation, the minister will visit Iran in the coming months to deepen our exchanges, as Laurent Fabius did in 2015, and Jean-Marc Ayrault in 2017, the ministry said in response to a question about plans for a diplomatic visit.

Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif travelled to Paris on June 29 in the final leg of a tour of Europe that had taken him earlier to Italy and Germany.

In his two-day stay in Paris, Zarif held meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and Foreign Minister Le Drian.

On July 3, Secretary-General of Frances Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development Christian Masset held a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for American and European Affairs Majid Takht Ravanchi in Tehran for the third round of regular political negotiations, an initiative agreed on by the two countries president in 2016.

The periodical talks began in January 2016, after a visit to Paris by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, when the two nations signed a number of agreement.
